What is RSS and how can I use it?

You may think of RSS as an announcement service that automatically tells you, whenever a new article on a certain web page or blog appeared. The good thing is, that RSS works in an unobtrusive way and you can include it into your favourite application (mostly.) The following icon signifies a RSS-feed.

Short list of programs and services that help you to read RSS

  • Browsers (i.e. Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer), in form of a bookmark.
  • E-Mail programs (i.e. Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook), in form of an RSS subscription
  • Web portals (i.e. Google Reader, My Yahoo, My MSN), integrated into your portal when you log in.

I can not cover all applications here, so I’ll give just three examples

Firefox Browser–RSS newsfeed works like a bookmark that recognizes changes to website

1. Click on the Link providing the RSS-subscription.
2. Firefox opens a small window, where you can add the subscription to your bookmarks.
3. Whenever you access this particular bookmark, it will show you a list of the most recent articles. You can now click on an individual articel which opens in the browser window. The list updates, whenever a new article gets posted on-line.

Thunderbird–New article headlines coming in, similar to new e-mail.

1. In your browser (i.e. Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer) right-click on the Link providing the RSS-subscription
2. Copy the URL (to the clipboard)
3. Switch to Thunderbird and select from the menu „File>New>Other Account“
4. Select „Blogs & Newsfeeds“, click „continue“, then enter a Name, e.g. „Art“ and click „continue and finish
5. In you folder pane you should find a new element, marked by the orange RSS feed logo, click this element and to the right there should be another option that tells you „edit subscription“, click this.
6. A smaller new window opens, click the button „Add“ and paste the RSS feed URL from the clipboard (see step 2). It should look similar to this: „http://irmielin.org/nothere/?feed=rss2“. Click ok and see the new article headlines coming in similar to new e-mail.

Google Reader

1. In your browser (i.e. Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer) right-click on the Link providing the RSS-subscription
2. Copy the URL (to the clipboard)
3. Log in at Google
4. On the top menu select „more>Reader“
5. Below the Google logo, on the left, you find a button „add a subscription“; after you click the button, a small window with an input field opens. Paste the RSS feed URL from the clipboard (see step 2). It should look similar to this: „http://irmielin.org/nothere/?feed=rss2“ and click „OK“
